projectiondesign avielo optix SuperWide 235 Projector
by Clint DeBoer — last modified September 12, 2010
avielo optix SuperWide 235 Projector made its worldwide debut at CEDIA Expo 2010 in Atlanta on September 22 2010,
The avielo optix SuperWide 235 utilizes a new high-resolution DLP chip, developed by projectiondesign engineers in partnership with Texas Instruments (TI), that allows an image of 2538 x 1080 resolution to be displayed in the home for the first time without the use of additional optics.
Until now, in home theater applications, the only way to truly watch a picture in 2.35:1 full format was to add additional bulky lenses to the front of the projector and then scale the picture to fit the screen. Even using high-quality optical glass, these lenses inevitably impact on image clarity and can reduce measured picture brightness by up to 10%. Now, thanks to the new avielo projector, the days of adding expensive lenses are at an end!

Until now you will have had to watch many movies with black bars across the top and bottom of the screen, so welcome to the true Cinematic experience of CinemaScopeThe Philips Cinema 21:9 TV is the the planet's very first 7:3 aspect ratio LCD Widescreen television (21:9 when used as a marketing and advertising term, in comparison to the widespread 16:9), intended to show movies recorded in CinemaScope or the modern day anamorphic format of 2.35:1
June 2009
You’ve got to hand it to Vizio. 10 years ago, these guys were barely a blip on the radar screen, and now they’re one of the dominant players in the television business. Now they’ve got a new TV that’s gonna have you running to the store to return that new set you just got for Christmas. The new XVT Pro Razor 580CD is the first television from Vizio to feature a 21:9 aspect ratio.
The 58″ set is an LED backlit LCD display, and is perfect for viewing 2.35:1 widescreen movies without those pesky black bars. The 80″ Razor LED will feature a whopping 2560×1080 resolution, and local dimming LED backlights for superior contrast ratios. The set also will sport built-in wireless HDMI, 802.11n WiFi and Vizio’s Internet App capabilities. The set will ship with a Bluetooth remote with a slide-out QWERTY keypad too.
I know, I know, last year I told you about a Philips 55″ 21:9 set, but it’s only available in Europe as far as I can tell, and it sells for over £4000 (about $6500 USD) and doesn’t have LED backlighting. And while the Vizio isn’t available in stores yet, Vizio promises the set will be released sometime later this year for sure, and given their typical bargain basement pricing, I bet it’ll be just a wee bit cheaper.

1. Sight lines; The height of the theater seat relative to the screen
a. When designing a theater some believe any platform will work to allow for viewing the screen. But depending on the height of the screen relative to the size of the room; the most common mistake is the platforms not being high enough to see the bottom of the screen without seeing the back of the head of the person in front of you.
2. Reflective wall colors or metallic faux finishes
a. All theater screens are made to attract light. Depending on the manufacturer the material, and the room conditions, some will attract more light than others.
b. Projectors are made to project light.
i. When other surfaces in the room reflect light, that is being projected, the light it reflects will end up on your screen or the light being reflected will end up on your wall or ceiling; which is very distracting. The idea behind going to the movies is to look through a window and see other world. How can this be accomplished when you are constantly reminded of the world you are still in?
3. The size of the screen is to small for the room
a. This may be personal preference but did you want a theater or a 40” TV in a big room.
i. We have seen larger columns than screens
1. This is often done because:
a. some how a contractor or designer thought it would look better
b. The speaker manufacturer does not want you to cover up their speaker
c. Or inexperience
4. Step lighting
a. I can’t tell you how many times this has been missed. It may not seem important until you enter the theater after the movie has already started and realize you don’t know the room as well as you thought… Or the kids need to go to the bathroom and the crying interrupts the best part because they just tripped and hit their head on the really expensive woodwork.
With an experienced designer; not only can you avoid these mistakes but you will find yourself saving money with equipment that works well with other equipment, not needing to install something you forgot and finding quality product that is less expensive and better applies to your design.
